Rural flight is the migratory pattern of peoples from rural areas into urban spaces.

Coming from what would be considered the “middle-of-nowhere” Iowa, I have witnessed a small portion of this trend first-hand. The towns explored in this publication are those I often traveled through when I was young and now when I visit home. I’ve seen downtowns deteriorate and disappear. Houses crumble and schools abandoned. Rural Flight begins to tell the stories of these towns.


A chair can be a symbol of residence. You see a bench outside someone’s house, you know someone lives there. These places were once home to someone. But they’ve gone from bustling towns to ruins. The chair is a reminder. A reminder that there are memories there.
